Anything is Possible

If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.

Friend, have you ever lifted your prayers to God only to wonder if it’s possible for them to be answered? Faith is a tricky thing … because faith is the confidence to trust, and we express that trust in prayer to God. But also residing within us is unbelief. You may have thought they were opposites, or that faith counters all unbelief, but experience tells us otherwise. Unbelief is characterized by incredulity (an inability or unwillingness to believe) and skepticism (an attitude or temper of doubt).

The father of a spirit-possessed boy once brought his son to Jesus’ apostles trusting they would be able to help him. Yet, they were not able to deliver the boy from his affliction. When Jesus arrived the father described for him all that the boy had suffered, and as he explained, the father begged, “have mercy on us and help us, if you can.” Do you imagine it is any different for you when you come to God in prayer? You have confidence and trust enough in God to pray, but with your faith you have your doubts and probably a bit of unwillingness to believe that He would help you. There you have it; faith and unbelief! So what did Jesus’ reply? “What do you mean, ‘If I can’? Anything is possible if a person believes. The father instantly cried out, “I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!”

Having faith does not cancel out having unbelief. The one must grow stronger, and the other must grow weaker and diminish if ever you want to see the answers to your prayers. Unbelief is swayed by everything we think, reason, or feel with our senses, but you overcome it when your faith is built up and your reliance upon God flourishes. The Bible says, “ask (pray) in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
