Evidence Of Things Unseen
For the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
Friend, what do you see when you watch TV or a movie, listen to the media, or just read the headlines? To be honest, I’m done with ‘murder, death, kill,’ and ‘big bada-booms’! Just give me something calm, with a redemptive story, that promotes peace and rest. And I don’t think I’m very different from God in that way, because early on in Genesis, the Bible’s first book, there’s a story about God and what He was seeing on Earth. The Lord observed the extent of human wickedness, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil; that the earth had become corrupt and filled with violence. It broke his heart.
But there was a man named Noah who found favor with the Lord. The very name Noah means ‘rest’. We read that he was found to be the only blameless person living on the earth. You might ask, “how could that be? How did Noah evade the charges set against the whole rest of humanity?” Well, we’re also told that he walked in close fellowship with God. So, when God finally said enough is enough, He told Noah about something to come that had never been seen before, a flood. Noah believed what the Lord said and did what the Lord asked of him.
So, for 120 years Noah diverted his eyes away from the violence and corruption and looked for the invisible things to come in every stroke of the saw and blow of the hammer. What he was building was very tangible, but what he believed in yet remained to be seen. He didn’t lose heart, and neither should you. Though our world is perishing in violence, when you walk with God, your inward man is renewed daily. Troubles are but for a moment, but they produce in us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever. So, knowing they are temporary, we don’t disregard the things that are seen, but instead, we consider the things that are unseen, being assured that those things are eternal.
