Only Speak the Word

For I also am a man placed under authority, … And I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

If you only knew what power you have in life to conquer evil, sin, and death!

One day a Roman Commander came to Jesus because a beloved servant was dying. When Jesus agreed to come to the officer’s house to heal the servant, he objected and said he wasn’t worthy to receive the Savior into his home. How often do we feign humility when in truth our dissension is born of unbelief? But not so for this commander as the rest of his words testify. “But only speak a word,” he proclaimed, “and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

This man knew how authority works! And the application of that concept to Jesus' spoken word was a marvel to the Savior. “Assuredly, I say to you,” Jesus declared to the crowd, “I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel! The Commander and the Christ both understood that authority is not only the right to control, command, or adjudicate affairs but also a power or right that is delegated or given. It was the Commander's faith that brought healing to his servant because he believed in Jesus' authority.

That declaration can also be yours when you speak the authoritative Word of God. “But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Act in the authority of a believer and speak the word of faith. Command God’s will, favor, and blessing to your situation, and see the salvation of God!
