A Better Way of Seeing

“Didn’t I tell you that if you believe you would see…”

Friend, are you wracked by worries? Does trouble surround you on every side? Have devastating messages of difficulty and hardship replaced your hope with fear? In it all, has your wearied heart uttered its final gasping prayer; “God where are you?” Let me tell you about a woman named Martha who was often very burdened with the cares of life. She had her high and low times like all of us, until one day, she hit rock bottom. Her brother had died and tragically, the one person she counted on to help had not come to her aid or comfort when she called. Despondent and discouraged, for days she watched helplessly as her brother’s life slipped away. And after her brother had been in his grave for four days, that was when Jesus finally showed up.

She brought him to where her brother was buried, but instead of mourning Jesus gave a very unexpected command, “Take away the stone!” Well, Martha objected knowing her brother’s body would be in a stinking dreadful state. But what was Jesus’ reply? Jesus said to her, ”Didn’t I say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?” He performed His greatest miracle that day and Martha’s grief was turned to exceeding joy! Now, what would happen to your worries, troubles, and fears if you applied Jesus’ words to your own situation?

You may not see a miracle, but if you remove the stone that seals in your stinking death and despair, and just believe, you’ll see everything differently. It’s not seeing that is believing. Jesus is telling you today, just as He told Martha long ago, ‘if you would believe you would see’. This world is filled with grievous things that cause our hearts anguish, but when you believe, you will see in a different light. This isn’t just to paint a pretty picture or put on rose-colored glasses. When you believe you can see that God’s glory always surrounds you! So take Jesus’ words as both a prescription and as a promise.
