Come and See

Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, “What do you seek?”

Friend, have you been searching for answers in life? Does it seem like you’re looking in all the wrong places? Or have you found the beginnings of a satisfying truth, only to wonder if it would indeed last? Two friends, Andrew and John embarked on a journey of discovery when they heard of a very different man proclaiming a very different message than they had heard in their traditional upbringing. For weeks they met with other seekers along the banks of the Jordan River listening to the fiery calls to righteousness and watching lives change as John the Baptist prepared the people in the waters of repentance.

What they felt as their conscience was cleansed of the guilt of sin was amazing, but the message never changed; it only beckoned for more to come. The Baptist proclaimed there was a greater One who was coming after him, and Andrew and John were standing close by when his arrival was announced,  “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” What, not only ‘washed away’ as in the baptism, they thought, but ‘taken away’ as in a wholly new life. Eagerly they left the Baptist’s side and ran along the bank toward Jesus.

He turned when he saw them following and asked them, “What do you seek?” Their hearts leaped with the inquiry but couldn’t formulate a specific question to satisfy all of their longings. So, they replied, “Teacher, where are you staying?” That was when Jesus said to them, “Come and see.” This was not just an invitation back to the house where he was staying. It was an assurance that if they followed after him, they would understand the answer to ALL of their questions. In fact, the very next words recorded in the gospel are these, “They came and saw …” You only need to believe and leave behind the varied paths you’ve tried, then come to the home of the Teacher and he will open your eyes to see. Come, believe, spend your time with Jesus and you will see.
