The God Who Seeks
“ …the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.”
Worship; according to the dictionary, worship is an adoring reverence or regard, a formal or ceremonious rendering of honor and homage paid to God or a sacred personage, or any object regarded as sacred. That’s a pretty far-reaching statement, but if you think about it, whether we call it ‘worship’ or not, there are a lot of things in our lives we render homage to! You may not have any reverence for God, but you are essentially a worshipping being. You may hold high regard for possessions, position, fame, or fortune, or you may try to lead a content and peaceful life, but something will always hold the affection of your heart. Jesus declared it like this, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:21
Many try to make room in their lives, offering some part of their time and attention to reverencing God. You might follow a certain tradition or attend to special practices because inside you have a realization that honor and homage are due. You give your regard as best you know how hoping God will receive your worship. Yet, you feel you’re falling far short, that you’re somehow not enough. When life spirals out of control and you just stop trying, when failure leaves you in guilt and shame, condemnation gets in the way of any relationship with God. If worship is supposed to be an exchange of adoration, wouldn’t it be more profitable to understand what God is seeking?
Jesus had a conversation with a woman at a well one hot summer afternoon. He told her one of the most remarkable things about God the Father; He is a God who seeks! Furthermore, it is not WHAT the Father is seeking, but WHO! The Father isn’t craving worship, He is seeking true worshippers! A prophet once said, “For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him.” 2 Chronicles 16:9 The Father is always on the lookout for worshippers that will worship Him in spirit and in truth. Jesus came to reveal to you that worship is a love relationship. One Hebrew word translated as ‘worship’ has the literal meaning of ‘to kiss towards.’ Like a true and loving marriage, your worship of God the Father is meant to be committed, constant, continual, and compliant. That’s exactly how devoted He is to you. Worship the Father with all your heart and life every moment of every day. As He seeks, He will find you.
