There We Saw the Giants

As a man thinks in his own heart, so he is …

Friend, have you ever had moments when you walked into a real-life likeness of your dreams? Something new comes upon your horizon and you get a glimpse of what could be yours. That’s exactly what happened with Caleb, Joshua, and ten other leaders who were sent by Moses to explore the Promised Land. They all told of the land’s abundance and even brought back samples! But when they described the cities, and the people they would come up against to possess the land promised them as an inheritance, they weren’t so thrilled.

When they told the people, murmuring broke out. Caleb stood to quiet them, assuring them they were well able to go at once and overcome the obstacles.  Would you speak like Caleb? Or would you be more like the ten leaders, thinking, “let’s be rational and think about this? After all, you have to believe your eyes, don’t you?” But consider this; vision is not what you see, it’s what you perceive. The difference here is not that Caleb didn’t see fortified cities or the descendants of Anak, who were giants. He saw them, and in his lifetime, he defeated them!

The dilemma is in how the ten leaders perceived themselves. “For there we saw the giants, and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.” Caleb believed in God’s promises, and in His divine ability to make those promises a reality. The other ten, well, their perception of themselves also revealed their perception of God. They only reported their inability to achieve their dream. They removed God from the process of achieving what He Himself had promised to them. So, they put their trust in their senses, denied a power greater than themselves, and sentenced themselves to a lifetime of wandering in the desert. Friend, remember, that as a man thinks in his heart, so is he. You can see the world rationally, but your vision must be aligned with God’s person, promise, and provision. See yourself as God has made you… you are the giant!
